Upper Lachlan LGA

Upper Lachlan LGA Regional Economic and Community Profile

Sitting atop the Great Dividing Range, Crookwell is the administrative centre for the recently proclaimed Upper Lachlan Council servicing a largely agricultural shire. Its economic base has been built around merino sheep and seed potato production for international markets but is now seeing diversification into olive growing, alpaca fibres and horse studs.  The economic base of the shire is also changing with tourism becoming the 3rd major industry behind agriculture and retail.

Gunning village services the western end of the Upper Lachlan shire and is home to a number of Canberra commuters who have moved to the region to experience the rural lifestyle while remaining close to employment markets.   The historic village of Taralga is a popular tourist stop servicing the eastern end of the Shire, about half way between Goulburn and the well known Wombeyan Caves.
