Palerang LGA

Palerang economic and community profile

Halfway between Canberra and the NSW South Coast is the National Heritage Trust classified township of Braidwood.  While servicing the surrounding agricultural region and its fine wool, beef and sheep grazing industries, tourists come to Braidwood for its restored 19th century buildings and to browse the arts and crafts galleries for which the town is known.

Bungendore, now the administrative centre of the Palerang Council, and is another growing community benefiting from its proximity to Canberra and Queanbeyan for employment and business opportunities while offering a rural lifestyle alternative; similarly there is growing interest in the historic former mining village of Captains Flat, 40 kilometres south from the Kings Highway.  The Defence Headquarters Joint Office Command project soon to be realised approximately 11kms between Bungendore and Queanbeyan will provide around 1000 defence and related jobs with many people expected to settle in these communities as well as Canberra.
