Yass Valley LGA

Yass Valley LGA Regional Economic and Community Profile

Another historic town in the region with links to our earliest explorers, Yass is the administrative centre for the Shire and has traditionally serviced the nation’s renowned fine wool industry. In the last 30 years a number of wineries, vineyards and regional food eateries in the nearby Murrumbateman district have increased the shire’s tourism and reputation as a cool climate wine region. Historic district villages include Binalong, Bowning, Bookham, Gundaroo and Wee Jasper with its beautiful nearby Carey’s Caves. Together with the Burrinjuck Dam recreation complexes they contribute to the tourism assets of the Shire. Yass and the Murrumbateman district have experienced rapid population growth in recent years with many residents commuting daily to Canberra for employment.
